Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of Malaysia’s economic development. Recognising their vital role in driving the nation’s growth and job market, the government has intensified its focus on accelerating SME and startup promotion to maximize their impact.
Over the past few decades, Malaysia has successfully transformed from an agriculture-reliant economy into a dynamic industrial hub. SMEs are at the very center of this transformation.
Today, SMEs make up nearly 97% of all businesses in Malaysia. Their collective impact is substantial:
GDP Contribution: Nearly 36%
Employment: More than 50% of the national workforce
Exports: Around 18% of total exports
To further capitalize on this momentum, the Malaysian government aims to push the SME contribution to 41% of GDP and expand their export share to 23%. Aseanz Corporate Services remains committed to supporting local businesses as they scale to meet these national benchmarks.
A major catalyst for this sector’s growth was the broadening of the official SME definition. Endorsed by the National SME Development Council (NSDC), these expanded thresholds allow more businesses to qualify for government incentives, grants, and specialised tax structures.
The classification applies across all key sectors including services, manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and mining and evaluates a business based on either its annual sales turnover or its number of full-time employees:
| Sector | Annual Sales Turnover | Full-Time Employees |
| Manufacturing | Less than RM50 million | OR fewer than 200 people |
| Services & Other Sectors | Not exceeding RM20 million | OR fewer than 75 people |
Modernising these definitions is just one part of a larger national strategy. The Malaysian government, alongside strategic partners like Aseanz Corporate Services, continues to actively dismantle administrative red tape, foster digital innovation, provide targeted financial aid, deliver executive management training, and upgrade infrastructure. These collective efforts ensure local SMEs can confidently unlock their growth potential in both domestic and global markets.
